A few years back, I was in South Beach Miami, and this little drink (not the passion fruit kind, but the regular kind) was popping up in every restaurant... The Capairinha. It's a Brazilian drink made with simple ingredients, Lime juice, sugar, ice and cachaca, which is a distilled spirit made from fermented sugarcane juice. Cachaca is similar to rum and very popular in Brazil.
Now, I must say, I'm more of a wine girl (or should I say 'whiny'...hahaha) and I'm not really a fruity-drink kind of person. But the description on this drink really caught my eye... hello, my new Latino lover! So I ordered this bad boy, and let me tell you, it was love at first sight (or should I say sip?) I have been mixing this up at home ever since. In fact, I even trained my local bartender how to make it! I walk into the bar, and he automatically makes my 'drink' (that's what he actually calls it). That's service!
At home, In the comfort of my own kitchen, I like to experiment with different drink concoctions. I whipped up this baby after a trip to the Dominican Republic where passion fruit was everywhere on our platters. In this recipe, I am not using real passion fruit, it's a little easier to use the 'bottled' kind. Yeah, I know, it's cheating, but a girl has to do, what a girl has to do!
So, let's get started and get some drinks flowing! First, put ice in a shaker and pour 2oz of rum (please don't use shitty rum, you will hate your drink... thank me later!) into your shaker. Add the juice of 1/2 a lime.
You can muddle the lime or I crank it through my handy dandy lime juicer . It's an actual lime juicer, the top is green for limes, and there is an interchangeable top that is yellow for lemons!... yes, I'm a kitchen gadget whore, don't judge!.
Also add the limes to your shaker, the more the merrier! Next drop in 1 tsp of sugar. Ok! I never said this was a healthy drink.... jeez! Lastly, add 1-2oz of the passion fruit juice (depending on how passionate you are..hahahaha)
Next, shake that puppy like you "shake it like a salt shaker" (yeah, who never danced to that song before? You know we all love it!),
Now pour the whole thing...including the ice into a glass, and always put a cherry on top to finish your drink!
PASSION FRUIT CAPAIRINHA
2 oz of rum (or cachaca)
1/2 a lime juiced (also add the lime)
1 tsp sugar
1-2 oz of Passion Fruit juice
Ice
Poor everything into a shaker and shake like a professional mixologist! Pour the drink including the ice into a glass and enjoy!
